Without the Career Center’s guidance, I would not have had the confidence to pursue a career in Pediatric Critical Care..

How have you benefited from using the Career Center services?

I used the Career Center services to help me prepare a resume, find a summer nurse externship in an area I was interested in pursuing, interview prep, and job applications.

How did working with the Career Center impact your internship/job search?

I felt more knowledgeable in pursing internships and jobs that interested me and I felt prepared in my applications and confident in my resume and interview prep. Without their guidance, I would not have had the confidence to pursue a career in Pediatric Critical Care.

What was the most helpful advice given to you by the Career Center?

Honesty. Honesty in my answers to interview questions and applications. Honesty about the competitiveness of pursuing a career in pediatric critical care and if I was a competitive enough candidate to stand out.

What challenges were you facing and how did the Career Center help you solve them or motivate you to solve them?

I had the excellent opportunity to accept a position for an externship, however, I felt I could not accept the position without knowing the outcome of the other application. The Career Center helped me weigh the pros and cons of each opportunity, I decided to wait and received news that I got the externship I waited for. A second challenge I experienced was the work I put into a job application, only to be denied even the opportunity for an interview. I was extremely discouraged and disappointed and the career-centered supported my feelings and encouraged me to continue to pursue other job opportunities and prepare for future interviews. After much waiting and many meetings/emails to the career center, I received several interviews: pedi neuro and pedi ICU/CVICU. The Career Center was there every step of the way and helped with interview prep. I was so excited to accept a position in the pedi CVICU that the second person I told (next to my parents) was my Career Consultant, Amanda Duvall.

What advice would you give others facing the same challenges you did?

I felt that the Career Center allowed me to be objective about the job application process and not let my emotions get the best of me. Without their assistance, I don’t think my resume and applications would have showcased my talents as successfully. Utilize the resources available because they won’t just help you get a job, they’ll help you get your dream job.

Where there any specific events you went to that were beneficial? If so which one and why was it helpful?

I went to each nursing career fair to learn about specific externship programs, and when I was ready to learn about Nurse Residency programs. It gave me insight into how an online application would look, what recruiters were looking for, putting names to faces, and making connections with recruiters.
